Finland - AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM Missiles

(Washington, July 11, 2008) -- On July 9, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Finland of 300 AIM-120C-7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), and associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $435 million.

The Government of Finland has requested a possible sale of 300 AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM, missile containers, spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistical and program support. The estimated cost is $435 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been and continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

Finland intends to use the AMRAAM missiles on its existing fleet of F/A-18C/D aircraft. The sale of AMRAAM missiles gives Finland credible territorial defense capability by increasing its sustainment capability during defensive operations, and extending the overall lifespan of its missile inventory. Finland, which already has AMRAAM missiles in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing these items.
